Understanding Multiplication and Division
Knowing mathematics means understanding what the operations mean, not just memorizing facts. In the December webinar for the edWeb.net Implementing Common Core Standards in Math community, Dr. Sara Delano Moore talked about building conceptual understanding of multiplication and division. She gave relative examples of different ways to look at terminology. Sara explored how teachers can help their students extend their knowledge of addition and subtraction and learn about the operations in ways which will continue to make sense as they move to fractions, algebra, and other advanced mathematics. Additionally, Sara discussed ways in which families can get involved and identify opportunities to practice math in the real world while doing every day activities.
