Puberty is a challenging time for all youth, but can present unique challenges for youth with  disabilities. This session shared instructional strategies for teaching the social skills, self-awareness, and safety skills necessary to provide appropriate sexuality education. Providing sexuality education for all students is essential, however is often not provided to students with autism, developmental and intellectual disabilities. Multiple barriers exist which often prevent individuals with disabilities from receiving adequate, if any, instruction regarding sexual development. Practitioners watching this recorded session will enhance their understanding of what barriers are preventing access to sexuality education for their students. Viewers learned what sexuality education content is important to teach, and how to teach such content. Examples of easy to use, accessible curricula and materials were shared.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify barriers to providing sexuality education and how to overcome these barriers
  • Identify important components of sexuality education
  • Learn developmentally and age appropriate strategies for teaching sexuality education
