Visual and concrete models support coherent content progressions in mathematics because they can be used across the grade levels. In this edWebinar, James Burnett, President and Co-founder of ORIGO Education, shared how you can make the most out of math models with your students. His presentation includes:

  • A brief introduction to the four visual models that are often used to teach various aspects of numbers in the elementary grades: the array/area model, the length model, the number line model, and the set model
  • A discussion of the benefits of using the array/area model for the development of multiplication facts in the lower grades
  • A demonstration of how this same thinking can be extended up the grades to provide conceptual understanding of multiplication strategies for whole numbers (including the algorithm), fractions, and decimals
