“Culture eats strategy for breakfast, operational excellence for lunch and everything else for dinner.” Quote attributed to Peter Drucker.

No matter the innovations, approaches or changes lead learners devise or create for schools, one significant fact is ever prevalent – people follow the culture of a school, not strategies. As we build more creative learning and teaching opportunities, whether it is instructional strategies or digital resources, we first have to ensure that we are creating a healthy, growing school culture centered on student learning and teacher development. This attention to school culture needs to be ongoing and requires planning, input, and monitoring from the entire school community. No school initiative can launch or sustain unless a healthy culture is in place to receive and nurture it.

Derek L. McCoy, Principal at West Rowan Middle School, focused on the characteristics of healthy, innovative cultures and the high impact strategies that lead learner teams can use to build the healthy, responsive cultures our schools need to help students maximize their learning and growth.

Reflect on these key issues around the culture at your own schools:

  • Do we have a healthy, evolving culture?
  • Are we maximizing PD?
  • What role does technology play in school culture?

Learn about the practical, strategic steps that his school is going through now to build an innovative learning culture focused on student growth and teacher development. This webinar is designed for leaders at all levels – teachers, assistant principals, principals and central office personnel.
