earlychildhoodDeveloping a conceptual understanding of numbers and how they work is critical for continued success in mathematics throughout a child’s academic career. In this edWeb.net webinar for the Early Childhood Learning Solutions community, Brian Mowry, M.A., Early Childhood Mathematics Consultant and Specialist, reviewed and discussed the knowledge and skills — in particular those related to verbal counting, enumeration, cardinality, and small number recognition — which develop in the preschool years and lay the foundation for good number sense.

Webinar attendees learned to:

  • identify pre-K and kindergarten focal areas and national standards related to the domain of number and operations;
  • articulate a scope and sequence for teaching early numeracy in early childhood classrooms; and
  • use materials and instructional strategies (e.g., guided explorations, small/whole group investigations, and learning centers) that promote inquiry into deep mathematical topics and are developmentally appropriate for 3 to 5-year-old children.
