Building Biliteracy Through Bilingualism: Using Effective “Technogogy”
As our nation’s demographics—and student population—change and technologies continue to revolutionize how teachers teach and how students learn, innovative schools are exploring ways to transform their curriculum and prepare students with 21st Century skills. The Academy for International Education (AIE), a tuition-free public charter school in South Florida/Miami-Dade, has implemented an exciting language learning “technogogy” for students to build bilingualism through bi-literacy in Spanish and English. In the edWeb.net Using Technology for Language Instruction community’s most recent webinar, presenter Vera Hirsh, AIE’s Principal, shared how student improvement has been realized through powerful instructional technology coupled with the synergy of effective blended learning classroom instruction. Vera explained how AIE defines and leverages technogogy and explored new ways to think about technology and its use in the classroom. She shared some of the many benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism for students and schools.
